Ocean Waves

NOAA WAVEWATCH III

Ocean Waves

Coverage: Global oceans · Update frequency: Every 3 hours · Format: GRIB2

Overview

NOAA's WAVEWATCH III is a third-generation spectral wave model that provides forecasts of wave height, period, and direction. The model covers global oceans and is updated every 3 hours.

How Sentinela Uses This Data

Significant wave height is displayed as a color-coded ocean overlay, from calm (blue) to extreme (red). This helps mariners and coastal communities understand sea conditions.

Data Processing

Wave data is fetched from NOAA servers in GRIB2 format. We extract significant wave height and render as a semi-transparent overlay over ocean areas.

Limitations & Considerations

Model resolution may not capture wave conditions in complex coastal areas. Actual wave heights can vary significantly over short distances due to local bathymetry and wind patterns.
